An Introduction to Gilgit-Baltistan

The area comprising GB is situated between 72-75 longitude (North) and 35-37 latitude (East).  To its north lies China, to its northwest lies Afghanistan, to its south lies Indian held Kashmir (IHC), and to its east lie the districts of Kohistan.  Spread over an area of 72,496 sq. km’s with a total population of 1.48million people, it is primarily a mountainous terrain whose heights vary between 3000 feet and 28750 feet above sea level. Three of the world’s largest mountain ranges (Hindukush, Karakorum and Himalaya) encompass GB

Gilgit Baltistan offers the largest deposits of Glaciers outside the polar. GB is watershed of the Pakistan offering more than fifty thousand megawatt identified hydro power potential and lies at the extreme north of Pakistan and directly connects People Republic of China and CARS States.The Tourism and Minerals potentials are largely unexplored and it offers greatest avenues and opportunities to the visitors and investors.

    CM takes oath
     
    On 1st December 2020, Advocate Khalid Khursheed Khan took oath as Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan. Governor GB Raja Jalal Hussain Maqpoon has administered the oath ceremony. Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chairman PTI-Pakistan on Friday approved nomination of Mr. Khalid Khursheed for GB CM slot. Mr. Khalid Khursheed was elected member of the GB Legislative Assembly from GBLA-13 (Astore-1) Constituency by defeating the PPP,s Abdul Hameed Khan and PMLN Rana Farman by a huge margin. Mr. Khalid Khursheed born on November 17, 1980 in the Rattu area of Shounter tehsil in Astore and received a law degree from Queen Mary University of London.

    PM arrives in Gilgit
     
    Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived in Gilgit-Baltistan and attended the oath-taking ceremony of cabinet members. GB governor Raja Jalal administered oaths to the newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly . While addressing the event, the premier congratulated the newly-elected GB chief minister and cabinet members. He expressed hopes that the new PTI government will address genuine public issues and will deliver a transparent governance system. CM Khalid Khursheed has briefed the PM at the inauguration ceremony of two national parks.

    On Friday, Chief Minister GB Khalid Khursheed paid a short visit to Chief Court GB. Chairman Chief Court Justice Malik Haq Nawaz received CM at his chamber.

    CM visits District Astore
     
    On Saturday, CM Khalid Khursheed khan paid two days visit to his native District Astore. People from all walks of life zealously welcomed the CM at various town unions (Rattu and Gudai) and district Head Quarter Astore. Addressing various public delegations at VIP Rest House Astore, CM has recapitulated his commitment to uplift health, education, tourism and infrastructure sector. CM also issued directions to heath authorities and district administration to ensure services of surgeon doctors in DHQ Hospital Astore.

    ETI Officials Brief CM
     
    On Tuesday, ETI GB officials briefed Chief Minister on ETI concepts, Program Design and Progress todate. The CM appreciated the progress made against the target of 59,000 acres of barren land development and linking these lands with 400 kilometers of roads and 7 bridges. ETI achieved these targets efficiently with much less cost as per PC1 cost. In the field of Agriculture Value Chain ETI has formalised farmers into cooperatives and registering 220 with the Coop Department. The newly developed lands will be titled to the beneficiary households. CM appreciated the progress and assured of all support.

    CM chairs first cabinet meeting
     
    On Friday, CM khalid Khursheed Khan chaired first cabinet meeting after constitution of new provincial (PTI) GB government. Important decision were taken in the cabinet meeting.

    On Thursday, CM attended high level meeting with DG FWO and Minister GBAJK in Islamabad. Discussed matters related to GB development projects and other issues.

    CM meets Prime Minister
     
    On Monday, Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Advocate Khalid Khurshid Khan called on Prime Minister Imran Khan at Prime Minister Secretariat, Islamabad. The meeting discussed development sector initiatives, promotion of sustainable tourism and new employment avenues in tourism sector for local community. PM urged to focus on environment friendly tourism, protection of glaciers and forests resources. Chief Minister briefed Prime Minister about his government top priorities and reforms agenda. The meeting also discussed various development projects and initiatives required to take benefits from the mines and minerals rich deposits in Gilgit-Baltistan.

    CM holds meeting with Chairman WAPDA
     
    On Monday, Chief Minister Advocate Khalid Khursheed Khan had meeting with Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Muzammil Hussain. Chairman (WAPDA) briefed the Chief Minister regarding water and hydropower projects ( Diamer Basha Dam, Harpo, Tangir, Thak, Shayok Dam, Basho, Attabad Lake, Skardu Dam, Tungus and Yulbo) are being implemented by the WAPDA in Gilgit-Baltistan.

ETI-Economic Transformation Initiative
  • Economic Transformation Initiative a seven-year development program of Govt. of Gilgit-Baltistan, co-funded by IFAD with a total cost of Rs. 12 billion to boost regional economic activity through agriculture value-chain development. The program aims at improving income, reducing poverty and malnutrition in the rural area of Gilgit-Baltistan.
  • The specific objectives are to improve production and productivity by bringing in additional 50,000 acres of irrigated land benefiting around 100,000 small landholders including women and landless; improving connectivity to market through construction and updating 400 km of farm to market roads and promotion of demand-driven value chains of regional products.
